Historically inspired lighting brings depth, comfort, and character to a former steel foundry transformed for entertainment and public gathering.

ArtsQuest at SteelStacks transforms a former steel foundry in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania into a dynamic event and performance space. The project celebrates the site’s industrial heritage while creating a warm, immersive environment for gathering, entertainment, and community life.

The lighting strategy reinforces this narrative through raw materials, exposed structure, and historically inspired elements. Rather than relying primarily on direct overhead illumination, light is directed toward surfaces to create a more relaxed and visually comfortable atmosphere. Modified “jelly jar” fixtures, retrofitted with LED modules and paired with perforated steel shrouds, establish a consistent industrial character while allowing variation across different applications.

Wall grazing, indirect illumination, uplit structure, and illuminated graphic panels add depth while keeping the ceiling visually clean. The result is a cohesive lighting environment that balances performance, energy efficiency, historical authenticity, and the experiential needs of a public cultural venue.
