Lighting disappears into the architecture so every performance—not the fixtures—takes center stage.

The lighting design for the Pennsylvania State University’s recital hall was driven by a simple goal: keep every audience member focused on the performance while supporting a world-class acoustic environment. Inspired by the architect’s clean, minimal aesthetic, the lighting was carefully integrated into the building’s exposed catwalks and layered ceiling construction, allowing fixtures to virtually disappear from view while providing exceptional visual comfort.

House lighting, theatrical lighting, and acoustic systems were closely coordinated to preserve complete performance flexibility, with DMX controls enabling smooth dimming to below 0.1 percent. Custom lighting solutions—including integrated catwalk luminaires, concealed pathway lighting, recessed downlights, and linear LED stair illumination—resolved complex architectural and maintenance challenges without compromising the design vision.

The result is an elegant, energy-efficient lighting environment that enhances every performance while celebrating the architecture and supporting the university’s educational mission.
